See bulletin There are two kinds of deer hunters, meat hunters and trophy hunters. As hunting week winds down to a close you've probably heard stories that range from "We didn't see anything," to "I passed up a doe or small buck for the big one." Each type of hunter has pros and cons to why they hunt in one way or another. But what tip does God's Word give about hunting? In Genesis 49:21, Jacob is on his deathbed speaking his last words to his twelve sons. As he goes through each one of them, he blesses them. When he comes to his son Naphtali (second son of Bilhah, Rachael's handmaid), he uses a hunting metaphor in his prophetical blessing. "Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns." That's all Jacob (Israel) said to Naphtali. But it is enough. Naphtali's children and descendants would occupy the region bordering the north western edge of the Sea of Galilee, and became very prosperous. A hunter that passes on (sets free) a deer will sacrifice that wonderful meat and allow more and more fawns to be born. This hunting tip is compared to 'herd management' in our own days. In the same way, we as God's children have been held captive to our sins, but have been set free from eternal death by Jesus Christ our Savior (Romans 8:1,2)! In that freedom of forgiveness you or I don't now go live without caution or care about what we say or do any more than a deer who has been set free by the hunter. Rather, we rejoice in our freedom and deliverance in Christ and now live even more alert and ready to help raise the next generation to be "beautiful" children who follow Jesus our Savior!
